Keurig-B140Keurig B140 Review.

The Keurig B140 Commercial Brewing System is an industrial strength brewing machine, designed for use in small offices, where there are up to 25-30 cups served per day.

It is also manufactured under a different model number, namely the Keurig B145 OfficePRO Brewing System: I clarified this directly with a sales rep at Keurig.com, who said that ‘The B140 and B145 are essentially the same brewer’ (email dated 06/08/2011).

Keurig.com stock the B145, (as does amazon.com) whereas if you buy from some other retailers, they sell the brewer as the Keurig B140. (However, in searching around on the internet, the more common form of this brewer is the B145 OfficePRO Brewing system).

Either way, the Keurig B140 (and B145) brews a perfect  cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa or iced beverage in under one minute at the touch of a button. Whether you have this in your home or office, you  will be able to brew the drink that you love.

The Keurig B140 (and B145) have the following features:

  • It comes in 3 brew sizes – 6-oz., 8-oz., 10-oz.;
  • Travel mug friendly, as it comes with a removable drip tray.
  • A removable water reservoir of 48 oz.;
  • It has an Auto-Off powersaving feature, where it automatically turns off after two hours of inactivity (saving on the power bills);
  • A Drainable internal hot water tank;
  • Size: 13.3″ H X 12.3″ D X 9.5″ W (Keurig B145), and 13.3″ H x 11.4″ D x 9.5″ W (for the Keurig B140). Thus the Keurig B145 is about an inch deeper than the B140. However, both weigh the same when empty, of 14lbs;
  • Heavy Gauge materials for high volume use (designed for commerical premises);
  • However, it is ‘UL Commercial rated only’, meaning that it is only designed for use on commercial premises (although many people use it at home as well);
  • Be advised, unlike the Keurig B40 home brewer, the Keurig B140 and B145 do NOT take the My K-cup fitting (which is a filter attachment that allows you to use your own coffee, rather than the Keurig’s K-cups – see below for more info).

Who is the Keurig B140 (aka Keurig B145 OfficePRO) suitable for?

The Keurig B140 is designed and certified for commerical use only, although a number of people have bought it for home use, as it is able to serve more cups of coffee per day that the Keurig B40 (which is designed for home use). In short, it is suitable for small offices/commerical premises where there is a need for up to 25-30 cups per day of delicious gourmet coffee/tea/hot cocoa/iced beverage, all at the touch of a button.

What do you need to consider before buying the Keurig B140 (aka Keurig B145 OfficePRO)?

The main thing you need to be aware of is that the Keurig B140 or B145, is designed to use coffee that is found in ‘K-cups’. A ‘K-cup’ is simply a plastic cup filled with coffee/tea, that you place into the coffee-machine. The B140/B145 then punctures the lid and base of the K-cup, and forces hot water down though the K-cup. You can see a demonstration of this in the following home-made video:

The result is a very delicious cup of coffee/tea/cocoa etc. HOWEVER, by using K-cups, you are ‘limited’ in the type of beverage that you can use with the Keurig B140 (or B145). That is, you can only the Keurig K-cups (although, having said that, there is a large choice – see here).

To get around  this limitation on other Keurig machines, there are accessories such as the ‘My K-cup’ coffee filter fitting, which allows you to pour your own coffee/tea into the fitting, and then use it with the coffee-machine. HOWEVER, as mentioned above, the Keurig B140/145 does NOT allow you to use the ‘My K-cup’ fitting, and this was found out by a number of customers only AFTER they had bought the B140/145! (The Keurig B40 elite brewing system – designed for home use only – DOES allow the use of the My K-cup attachment).

HOWEVER, all is not lost! As one reviewer found out, there is ANOTHER attachment that you can use with the Keurig B140/145, known as the ‘EkoBrew Refillable K-cup’ –  click here to check it out at amazon.com (if you scroll down on the amazon.com page, you will find a video review from a satisfied customer). Out of 183 customer reviews of the EkoBrew Refillable K-cup on the amazon.com website (as at September 2011), 163 customers gave it 4 and 5 stars – that’s an approval rating of 90%!!!

Are there any negatives to the Keurig B140 (or Keurig B145)?

On the manufacturer’s website (keurig.com), around 16 people reviewed the Keurig B140, and 86 people reviewed the Keurig B145. The Keurig B140 received an average rating of 3.7 stars (out of 5), and Keurig B145 OfficePRO received a slightly higher average rating of 3.9 (out of 5).

The biggest complaint that people had about both the Keurig B140 and B145 is that they do not allow the use of the ‘My K-cup’ coffee filter, meaning that you need to buy the plastic K-cups for each cup of coffee/tea that you have. Of course, as I discussed above, you can use another refillable K-cup, namely the EkoBrew, which allows you to put your own coffee into the machine, without having to buy the K-cups.

The second biggest complaint that I noticed was the noise that this coffee machine produced, although one reviewer argued that it is no louder than any other coffee machine. Another reviewer had this to say about the loud noise: ‘In reply to the other review about how it vibrated and made a VERY loud noise when priming, I experienced the same issue, I called the company about that, and what happens is, you have to lift up the reservoir (which is already filled with water) and set it back down. If it’s not setting down just right, it can’t siphon in the water, which causes that bad vibration and LOUD noise’. (L.Pounds, from amazon.com B145 review).

Keeping these problems in perspective, the 86 reviews of the Keurig B145 (on the Keurig.com website) give it just under 4 stars out of a total of 5 – a very decent approval rating. The Keurig B140 has 17 reviews on the Keurig.com website, and likewise, these are just under 4 out of 5 stars.

What are other people saying about the Keurig B140 (and B145)?

Here are some of the comments that I’ve cut-and-pasted from various review sites:

‘So far we are loving this coffee maker! This is our second, with the first being the B145. I see no difference between the B145 and the B140 with the exception of the color of the top (one is silver, the other is black). While it is a bit on the noisy side, the brewing is fast & the noise therefore quiets quickly. We have no complaints so far!’ (Isabella Cullen, Keurig.com B140 reviewer).

‘We are avid coffee drinkers, and we always use travel mugs in the morning. There isn’t a setting for a 16 ounce cup, but we get around that by brewing two 6 ounce cups with a singular k-cup. It give us the perfect amount and intensity of coffee, and leaves enough room for cream and sugar. I love that everyone can have exactly whatever kind or flavor of coffee that they want. No more having to drink chocolate peppermint coffee in the morning because I wasn’t the first one up and I don’t want to waste a whole pot. I also love that it’s always a fresh cup of coffee. No more burnt, old coffee. Just a nice fresh cup. I find that there is a nice variety of K-cups as well, and if you shop around you can usually get them at a great price. My local Bed, Bath and Beyond carries them and you can use a 20% off coupon on them. Impact Office Pro also carries them online, for even cheaper than Keurig’s site with their coffee club discount.’ (hbere, amazon.com B145 reviewer).

‘I cannot live without coffee, I thought that using a Keurig would not be cost effective, but I was so wrong. I love this machine and I cannot imagine my life without it. That morning cup of joe just got even better knowing I don’t have to fuss with a traditional coffee maker. Not filling filters and spilling coffee grounds all over, simply put in the k-cup and push a button. Can’t get any easier. The large water tank makes this mahcine a must have. The only con I listed was that it is noisy. I wish this went away over time, but no luck. It has it’s days of quieter noise, but overall still bothers me. Other than the noise, which may be tollerable for less caffeine driven people, I have nothing bad to say about this machine. Excellent and I will be suggesting it to others’. (MonkeySeePhotography, keurig.com B140 reviewer).

In Conclusion.

In conclusion, the Keurig B140 (and B145) is a great machine for those who are wanting to serve more cups of coffee than the home-models (i.e. the Keurig B40), such as in an office environment. Whether you use the official K-cups, or use the EkoBrew attachment, it will give you the delicious coffee/tea that you are after, all at the convenient press of a button.
